I'd encourage you not to judge #hackerNews by (some of) the people who *post* there.
My post about Mastodon was recently on HN, and caused a surge of new registrations to @fosstodon—and those new users have been overwhelmingly great folks.
Even if some of the most prolific commenters have some of the flaws you describe, HN posts *also* reach much wider audience
