@davehunt Your GNU Social bio says you are blind, so I think I know who you are, assuming you've been at more than one LibrePlanet.
If that's the case, I've seen how effortlessly you seem to use your computer and I've been really curious to talk to you about how you do your computing, what challenges you face, what we as a free software community are doing well, and what we can do better. In fact, if you've ever considered public speaking, I think that'd be a really interesting and important topic that everyone could learn a lot from at #LibrePlanet.
If you're planning on attending next year, maybe I can find you, unless it's something everybody asks you about and you're sick of talking about.- Victorhck, Dr. Edward Morbius :o: and CraniumSlows like this.

At times and places where/wen I'm feeling triggered or microagressed (that's probably not a word), I can't stand talking about how I use the computer and accessibility, but, A #libreplanet conference is not one of those occasions, so, I'd better fire up org mode, and get started on the outline; Hahahaha. Yep; I've been to several LP conferences and, perhaps, to your talk on #GNU #Guix? I know your name and voice; perhaps we've shaken hands and exchanged pleasantries? Next LP is a year away; I hope you and I can chat sooner. -

@davehunt The Guix talk was actually @dthompson, but we're both young guys and may sound a little bit alike. :) I don't think we've spoken before, but my first LibrePlanet was four years ago and I don't recall all of the people that I've exchanged pleasantries with.
I'd love to chat with you sooner, certainly.
I feel I should clarify my talk suggestion: I'm not FSF staff and can't say if such a proposal would be accepted; I just meant to say that I would absolutely attend and hope that it would be.
Anyway, good to know that I have the right person in mind. :)David Hunt and Dr. Edward Morbius :o: like this. -

Yep; you got me!
First thing, I'd want to make sure the talk hasn't been given recently. On getting overloaded with introductions: I find it happens more easily as I age:) -

@davehunt The most recent accessibility-related talk I can remember at LibrePlanet is by Chris Hofstader in 2017:

@davehunt @mikegerwitz one of the locals for our user group gave us a great presentation on how he interfaces with a GNU/Linux system
I learned a lot that night, definitely a worthwhile experience for the audience
I enjoyed conversations with him after our meetings
unfortunately, he then got a job out of state and had to move

I remember that #a11y presentation in the 2017 #libreplanet and thought, at the time, it was missing demonstration of how the guy actually does things. I've done some demos and made some live tutorial recordings re: using a #GNU #Linux system with the accessibility tools, and think this could be a promising thing for an LP conference session. I wonder if I can show some exercises that go well, and contrast with some that do not, and discuss how to close this gap?

@davehunt @mikegerwitz The exercises sound great to me
Steven demonstrated how he used org-mode and emacs speak
he did slow down emacs speak for the rest of us
he also demonstrated a screen reader with a web browser
the issue I remember the most was about the screen reader being confused by an h3 directly following an h1 with no intervening h2
it really was a learning experience for most of us in the audience

Maybe I'll write some html with some out-of-sequence headers and see what the current generation of the orca screen reader and firefox ESR do with it; should still be running #debian testing in a year:) How considerate of Steve to slow his #emacspeak for you guys; thanks for reminder to do that in my demos.

@davehunt @mikegerwitz Please also point to some explanations of standards that don't require being a development expert
he also demonstrated pitch change
I think one third of his talk was essentially an ad for org mode and emacs speak

I need to fix something in my #emacspeak instance, as the pitch changes don't seem to work as they should. I do, however, get the little "earcons". I hope the pitch thing can be done without installing a non-free voice. I'll do my best not to make my talk an ad for anything, hard as that may be. Some of my tutorials are ads for !trisquel this was bad, as I said, in the first one, "these are distro-neutral". *smiling*

@davehunt @mikegerwitz I think fan-based mini-ads are fine
it's good to show enthusiasm
I like how #LibreLounge added some ads for nginx and others to the oggcast
earcons?
I am pretty certain that Steve was using a free voice
I do recall him saying emacs speak was often buggy

Earcons: little non-verbal sounds that indicate status. E. G. "this is the minibuffer", "your incremental search no longer matches anything", or "you got a new direct message in an erc buffer, go look at it"... While they may not be essential for the operation of #emacspeak, they're helpful.

@davehunt @mikegerwitz @bthall are earcons built in to emacs speak?

#emacspreak, packaged for #debian, includes an earcons theme, and it is activated by default. There is a boolean switch in emacspeak's customizations for toggling it. CC: @mikegerwitz @bthall
