What if cell #phone carriers only let you talk/text with people on the same carrier network? Everyone would need to carry 4 different sim cards, similar to having multiple accounts.
Sounds terrible? Good. That's what #Facebook is doing now.

@rw A few family members complain that I can’t see their calendar events, but the biggest annoyance I have with not being a #Facebook user is all the people that say “did you see what cousin so and so just said?” and then stick their phones in my face.
If I wanted to see all that random garbage, I would still have an account.
Yes, but how can we get in touch with you?
Let me count the ways:
* call
* text
* !XMPP
* #Wire
* #Ring / #Jami
* e-mail
* in person
* contact any of my sons, nephews, siblings, my youngest niece, the cousin that lives in TX, or my mom and ask them to forward -

@moonman I think everyone has that problem. My mom and one of my brothers obtained some photos from my childhood and uploaded them to #Facebook recently. And then there are all the photos taken at a recent family wedding (also uploaded to FB). -

@mike
Yeah, I agree that the headline is hyperbolic.However, the cross-site-scripting vulnerability seems pretty significant. The idea that someone who manages to inject a bit of javascript into a website would be able to send span signed with my private key is pretty alarming. Not *too* alarming right now, because they'd have to inject JS into #facebook, #twitter, or #reddit, or #hackerNews.
Even so, it seems like a big enough vulnerability that I wish they'd taken it more seriously.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/why-facebook-is-powerless-to-stop-its-own-descent/ [ZDNet]
The article claims fewer people trust #Facebook and “user engagement” is falling while growth has slowed.
While I do want Facebook and other #corpocentric sites to lose their attractiveness to the people that currently use them, I think the author writes from Disney’s Fantasyland instead the real world. -

@delores @ocean I think the amount of data being uploaded from the 8 or 9 out of 10 people using Windows dwarfs the data from Google's clumsy web-based tracking scripts. Despite #Google's intrusive data-collection, I think they still have less info on most people than either #Facebook or #Microsoft.
That said, we don't have to choose either one (except at work / school, where the choice is made for us by people who do not have our welfare in mind). -

I'm tempted have a similar blog-post reading list, but I know I'd forget way too many posts that are absolutely foundational to the way I think/approach certain problems.
(I remember having the same problem way back when #facebook was invite-only for academic institutions and prompted you for a list of "favorite books". It wasn't that I couldn't come up with anything—I just *knew* I'd leave something crucial out!)

Apparently, #facebook has 1 moderator for every 260,000 users. (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/xwk9zd/how-facebook-content-moderation-works)
I wonder what the average ratio on #mastodon is? I think my instance has on the order of 1000× more moderators per user, which feels about right.
Really, anything below 1 mod per 500 users seems stretched pretty thin to me. *Maybe* 1 per thousand.
But I'm coming from a small instance and have a background in small communities. What ratio seems right to y'all?
