Interesting article about the social pressure of GitHub

Where is that link shortener really pointing? This tool will tell you (code on #GITHub)

-
@jordila My only niggle is it's a #GITHub project but that's about them using nonfree bits in GITHub, not a technical issue with #Electron
-
@maloki Sorry, don't take my long post as some kind of rant against you (that's how I interpret the "dude").
I just explain my perspective of it after a couple of years in this environment ;) And I can't do it on the #GitHub issues because, y'know, I don't like being a customer with proprietary services etc.
-
@HerraBRE though I see now that you complained about #Mastodon not respecting the Accept: header... Yeah, that's obviously a bad bug and should be reported as such.
Unfortunately I can't create or discuss Mastodon issues as I'm not a customer with #GitHub...
-
@maiyannah I've been looking at a *lot* of dead repos on #GITHub recently. Too much software foam fragments efforts and confuses users
-
@Gargron PS. I can't join the discussions on #GitHub because I'm not a customer there. I hope you're getting my input through here.
-
@rysiek @lambadalambda My hope is that #FOAF gets implemented in #Mastodon. Then any FOAF crawler can generate a good overview of the social graph.
(I can't add issues or requests since I'm not a customer with #GitHub, so cc: @gargron)

Do GitHub's updated terms of service conflict with copyleft? https://u.fsf.org/24x #Github#ToS #copyleft
-
I'm also not sure what the new GitHub ToS really means, but this are some valid questions https://io.schiessle.org/url/31672 #GitHub #ToS #FreeSoftware

Current Free #github alternatives:
pagure.io/pagure
gogs.io / gitea.io
kallithea-scm.org
gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce
rocketgit.com

@gargron @lohang So you're using #github almost like a #fossil repo.

-
@bobjonkman @vinzv Good question. #gogs too. #github mirror would make a certain amount of sense, but the main repo? #gitea
-
@louis @gargron I'm not sure he would gain more exposure. But he'd be doing the right thing and sending a signal that we don't need #github.
-
It's fun that exactly what you said about #InternetOfThings and #DDOS was used on #Twitter, #Spotify, #GitHub etc. only days after the talk :)

help free software authors escape the #github trap: ask them not to _push_ contributors there: https://brusio.pallamondo.net/url/1839
-
@majestyx Oh, I didn't know M$ hosts on #GitHub. I assumed they used their own "codeplex"-whatever-they-called-it.
-
Or I could use this to extract https://github.com/mapzen/metroextractor-cities (because I can't request them to add Umeå as I am not a customer with #GitHub)
-
OH COME ON! #GitHub doesn't even have #IPv6?!

@tuttle Last weekend I was ready to stay home instead of going to a "fix/remake" workshop (me representing !umehack) because they hadn't setup _any_ communication outside of walled gardens (apart from collecting emails).
I had told them they should get just an ordinary website. It didn't happen until I explained that only supporting walled gardens directly oppose a hacker ideology, diminishing my motivation to help. Also their mails had "Sent from my iPhone" advertisement, despite Apple's infamous environmental disservices (not ideal for the workshop!). I had to ask them several times to remove it before they did so.
I think it's important to show those who want help from the !foss community that what we do is in fact important and that centralisation of the internet is bad for _all of us_.
Our common struggle is in fact so important that we _should_ say no to "bad deals". If we don't say no to #Slack, #GitHub, #Facebook etc. it's effectively the same as saying _yes_ to them.
