"Third-party XMPP clients will continue to work with Hangouts for 1-on-1 chats after June 26. XMPP federation with third-party services providers will no longer be supported on June 26."
Uh, what does this even mean?

Linux Walt (@lnxw48a1) (lnxw48a1)'s status on Thursday, 09-Feb-2017 02:16:34 UTC Linux Walt (@lnxw48a1) #Google might not index every pod quickly. They could focus on the larger #Diaspora pods like JD and DiaspDotOrg.
NOTE: according to logs on the old servers (S1FN/S2FN/S1OSP), #Bing indexes much more frequently than Google, yet their results are almost always far worse.

rozzin (rozzin)'s status on Friday, 06-Jan-2017 20:49:28 UTC rozzin Every time a #GMail user is unable to receive my #email because #Google inexplicably ate it, and someone suggests I should give up on !selfhost'ing and just let Google manage *my* mail too, I can only think "are you insane!? Then *I* wouldn't be able to receive e-mail either! Why would I want that!?".

Social networks Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have bowed to Turkish government pressure to pull certain posts off their pages or risk being blocked in Turkey.
Of course they have.

Mike Gerwitz (mikegerwitz)'s status on Wednesday, 31-Aug-2016 17:45:39 UTC Mike Gerwitz To be clear: this is a good thing, because a major concern has been that #Google can correlate traffic on numerous sites (presenting CAPTCHAs) with a given user/session. (#CloudFlare is another problem, but impossible to evade---you have to go through their servers.)
#SpyBlock has blocked this for quite some time.
So, as if it wasn't already a PITA enough, my new workflow any time CloudFlare presents me with a CAPTCHA (which is frequently): 80% of the time, close it. Other 20%, open the CAPTCHA in a new tab, solve it, copy the text, close the tab, paste it in the original site, submit, get a redirect failure in my browser 90% of the time, hit the back button, refresh the page. It's just that easy!

Might I remind everyone of all the other things Google gathers about you (use #Replicant, btw, or at the very least don't identify yourself with a Google account):
Mike Gerwitz (mikegerwitz)'s status on Sunday, 22-May-2016 16:53:58 UTC Mike Gerwitz @saurav There are many other ways for Facebook to discover that type of information (as some commenters stated); I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that Google is sharing data with Facebook (which is also probably not in their best interest business-wise)---there's not compelling evidence pointing to that.
That said, #Google does spy, and I'd recommend that users consider alternatives to #GMail and others, as well as #SaaS-based #MUAs. If she's talking about patients, that's especially sensitive data that's not good to share with 3rd parties!
I host my own mailserver, so I can't speak to good alternatives; maybe !privacy can. I'll reply to that Reddit thread.

This is what you should expect from proprietary devices that are locked down with #DRM, draconian legal protections from the #DMCA, and #SaaSS. Part of me has no pity, but part of me also recognizes that these users are innocent victims.

Mike Gerwitz (mikegerwitz)'s status on Monday, 22-Feb-2016 02:23:23 UTC Mike Gerwitz #CloudFlare has been showing #Google's image #reCAPTCHA. It's bittersweet: they're easier than the terrible text that machines probably have an easier time reading than humans, but at the same time, I've found that apparently I can't identify street signs with any predictable level of accuracy.
This whole human test thing is falling a little short when I have to struggle to prove that I'm human, and then wonder if maybe I'm just an idiot.
