Or "please open this big ball of potentially-radioactive #JavaScript". Uh, no. Not when you can't even tell me why I should let the JS run unless I let the JS run first. -

@xahlee One reason they do all those things is because the browsers' implementation support is so scattered. I'm not saying they are right, but the alternatives are either 1997-era "this site works best in Internet Explorer 4" buttons or limit functionality to #JavaScript subsets that are broadly supported.
Or, you know, create sites that mostly work without relying on JS. Has the industry forgotten "progressive enhancement" again? -

Worst case of a #Javascrippled site I have ever seen, misleading the naive user to think that running without #Javascript is a security problem. #JSDR (Javascrippled, Didn't Read) https://gs.jonkman.ca/attachment/42428 -

@kzimmermann For one thing, with the new #NoScript, it isn't clear to me how to _temporarily_ accept #JavaScript from a site, nor how to revoke those temporary permissions. I haven't used #uMatrix yet, but I'll be willing to take a look. -

I don't buy the "the rise of ad-blockers led to the rise of (whatever bad thing is being discussed)" theories. They are almost always false.
Ad-blocking didn't cause pop-ups and interstitials. Those things predated ad-blockers, and were caused by the abysmally low response rates (click-through) of online ads.
Ad-blocking didn't cause the ads that expand to cover the content of a page or the dashed green underlines within a page's text that pop up small ads when you mouseover them. They are merely a continuation of the trend that started with pop-ups.
Ad-blocking didn't cause tracking. Tracking was caused by the idea that "making ads relevant" would improve click-through rates. It happened independently of ad-blocking.
Now, ad-blocking supposedly caused the rise of surreptitious #JavaScript cryptocoin miners? Does that also explain the existenence of mobile (and desktop) software that contains hidden cryptocurrency miners? Because the two are likely closely related. -

I hope that this nasty #Cryptocurrency mining #Javascript trend at least serves to educate more people on why #NoScript is important. -

@jim Too much #JavaScript. Loading a page via #hotel_wifi can take >2 minutes. During that time, you can do nothing else on your phone. -

@veer66 From what I've seen, any kind of privacy settings (even turning off #JavaScript) triggers #CloudFlare's captchas. Most of the time, if they show you a captcha, it will be followed by another and another until you finally give up.
Similar experience for #Tor users. -

@xahlee I know that lots of static sites use #Disqus for comments, but should we infest visitors' browsers with remote-hosted vile 3rd party #JavaScript after we've gone static to protect our sites from remote execution? -

@beni I also block most ads (by blocking the #JavaScript they depend on), but adblocking only became a thing after advertising companies realized that people were ignoring ads and reacted by making ads more intrusive. -

@katiekats @maiyannah It is true that most people look only at the nearest possible term and not at the effects & consequences. There are lots of things that would simply die out if people allowed themselves to think about the consequences and to respond accordingly.
Threadbare games which require paid DLC to make them usable is one of those things. So is rampant #JavaScript code executing in everyone's browsers. -

I can't generally view #imgur's images on my phone's default browser ( #JavaScript disabled ). Since there is no good reason to require JS to view images, I just avoid their #JavaScrippled site entirely. -

What's wrong with modern #JavaScript (or #TypeScript)? When people would prefer a program that scaffolds a library project instead of just learning how it fucking works.
Come on, you don't need shit like rollup and travis integration for a small project and if you're doing a larger project you'd better learn how they work and if they're a good fit for your project instead of blindly adding them.

@peakwinter Not finished reading it yet, but this part stood out:
> And they expect [sites] to load basically instantly.
I think the normal experience of waiting up to 2-3 minutes for gobs of #JavaScript to load and display the page has changed that expectation. If someone's computer or software is a little older or their connection is a little slower, that person may never experience the snappy feeling that devs seem to believe their script-heavy sites produce.
