Chairman Bob #Goodlate: "---it will set a #precedent, for other requests from the [#FBI] and any other law enforcement agency to seek the same assistance in many, many, many other cases."

FBI Directory James #Comey: "Sure, potentially. [...] But sure, other courts, other prosecutors, other lawyers for companies will look to that for guidance or to try to distinguish---"

    Yes, no shit. Yet:

Comey: "The San Bernardino litigation isn’t about trying to set a precedent or send any kind of message."

You're lying about not wanting to set a precedent, but it doesn't matter either way---that's what will happen.

Yes, we should not allow a #precedent to be set by #Apple being forced to rewrite their software. But it's a mistake to focus on the technical.

#iOS is #proprietary software. That is unethical---if it were #freesoftware, then the #FBI could simply modify it themselves. Since I believe that all software should be free, that means that iOS should be free and consequently the FBI should be able to modify the software themselves.

Protections must be done cryptographically and policitcally. Arbitrary feel-good software protections don't count.

But #codeisspeech. Setting a precedent in this case means setting a precedent againt First Amendment rights. *That* is the problem. Do not support Apple and iOS; support free speech.
