Security record of open source and free software
"The Coverity report finds a slightly lower defect density of free software versus proprietary software; in the area of Web applications, however, the exact opposite result was found, which is essentially due to the security weakness of PHP."

So I asked where I can find the source code of #Docker Hub on their subreddit, and rather than allowing for unfavorable discussion, they censored it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/docker/comments/5r67ih/location_of_docker_hub_source_code/
Despite Docker being free software, and their registry server being free, Docker Hub (the React program that's a UI atop of the registry) is #proprietary. While you can use the registry from their CLI tool, you cannot register an account without running non-free #JavaScript.
They apparently have a GitHub "project" for submitting issues; that project has no source code. I added an issue:
https://github.com/docker/hub-feedback/issues/946
I don't use Docker personally.

Yes, we should not allow a #precedent to be set by #Apple being forced to rewrite their software. But it's a mistake to focus on the technical.
#iOS is #proprietary software. That is unethical---if it were #freesoftware, then the #FBI could simply modify it themselves. Since I believe that all software should be free, that means that iOS should be free and consequently the FBI should be able to modify the software themselves.
Protections must be done cryptographically and policitcally. Arbitrary feel-good software protections don't count.
But #codeisspeech. Setting a precedent in this case means setting a precedent againt First Amendment rights. *That* is the problem. Do not support Apple and iOS; support free speech.

The #FBI used #Flash and a broad #warrant to de-anonymize any visitors to a child porn #TOR service honeypot:
https://social.mikegerwitz.com/url/1072
"An FBI complaint described the site as 'the largest remaining known child pornography hidden service in the world.'"
It's great to know that our government is responsible for one of the largest child pornography dumps in the world.
Child pornography is a terrible thing, but this is a dangerous precedent, and is a very slippery slope. What else will the government decide is worth actively exploiting users' computers?
You should never install flash because it is #proprietary software. And I always recommend disabling #javascript. But to protect against this sort of attack, I recommend #Whonix.

Wow. #Apple will brick your #iPhone (with a fingerprint reader, is seems) in iOS 9 if it has been repaired by someone other than Apple:
https://social.mikegerwitz.com/url/982
You shouldn't be using an iPhone to begin with. But this shows another way that #proprietary software is used to control users---in this case, having the effect of controlling the repair market too.
Just give Apple more money for a new iPhone, forget that you lost your personal data unless you decided to back it up to the "iCloud" (which is a terrible idea), and then move along and be happy.
Or run an operating system that respects your #freedom, like #Replicant.

#Microsoft is liberating #ChakraCore, a part of their Chakra #JavaScript engine. This seems to be exciting news, for a few reasons: users will be running less #proprietary software; the free software community has gained a great project; and Microsoft---once the big bad guy---continues to cooperate with communities rather than fight them.
https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2015/12/05/open-source-chakra-core/
With that said, we need to wait and see what the license will be before we celebrate too much. As long as it is #freesoftware, we should be happy, but ideally it will be compatible with projects using #copyleft and, specifically, the #GPL.
